1.) I got back around 2:00 in the afternoon yesterday. We took a trip down to Myrtle Beach with some friends for the weekend. Given it was 2 days packed with scheduled things to do, I left the "ocean fishing gear" at home. It was a windy, rainy, and cold 2 days down there. There were only a few people on the beach, given the temps were in the upper 40's to low 50's. We didn't see a single ship out in the ocean (we continued looking for the Deadliest Catch crew, it felt like the Bering Sea...). Enjoyable weekend that surprisingly went by slow...

2.) Fishing has been slow as of lately. Fish nymphs on the bottom with plenty of split shot. There are a few fish that are holding in calm and shallow water that may rise to a dry though. Check the hatch chart in the lower left column for flies to try.

3.) I may be able to get out on Saturday. If so, Wilson Creek or Stone Mountain...

4.) The Montana Grizzlies won in a great football game against Appalachian State. Snow started to fall towards the end of the 1st half and by the beginning of the 2nd, the field at Washington-Grizzly Stadium was covered in snow; it was a full fledged blizzard. We play Villanova this Friday in the Nat'l Championship game. I'm ready for it!!

Hey Tyler,

Spent yesterday at SMSP. VERY SLOW! I tried everything and eventually brought a couple in. They look like they are on the bottom but very shut mouth. I did get a nice 15 incher though that rose to a dry in the swifter current. That was my first time in a few months that I havent caught 15 or more I think I ended the day with 5.

Lance

p.s. nothing flashy, go as drab and dark as you can.

Slow is the word right now. I'm sure that water is COLD!!

A 15 incher rising to a dry in mid December is a sight to behold!! Glad you caught some.

Did you fish the East Prong or somewhere else in the park?

Hey Tyler,

I took a budy from work and we fished the East Prong. I watched that 15" as he came off the bottom to hit it. Im not sure what has happened up there recently though. Some big trees that where down in the river are gone. The holes seem thinner, and they are hugging the bottom. I was perplexed because I have been doing realy well up there. I dont know if they had some hard rain and it flushed the stream or what. I wouldnt throw bigger than a #16 and you cant let it drag for a second. patience is key right now.

I'm sure the forest service removed the downed trees. Don't know why, they've been sitting there for years. Probably was a safety issue that triggered the USFS to remove them.

The recent rain has altered some of the streams. Not total transformation, but like you said the pools are thinner and not as "full" as they used to be probably as a result of erosion dumping mud, dirt, sand, etc into the water over the last few weeks...Just my 2 cents...

Hey Tyler,

update on the stream conditions... I just read a report about the recent weather in the mountians. It seems that they have seen heavy rains and high water recently. Niether the park service nor the state removed the downed trees. I was told that its possible the high water has moved them. This explaines why the trout seemed less dense in the holes and why they seemed very "shut mouthed". I think a tree floating through my home would scare me too. In a few days or so the Rainbows may become more active.
I forgot to mention that I did see several Brookies on redds in the tail ends of deep pools. I fished closer to the banks just so I wouldnt desturb them.
If you brave the weather Saturday, I think you may see and awsome snow flake hatch. lol.

Lance,

I didn't know the water was high and swift enough up there to dislodge those huge trees!! I'm sure they're making new habitat somewhere downstream though...

Doesn't look like I'll be getting out this weekend...Up to a foot of snow or more up in the Stone Mtn region Friday night into Saturday. Driving down I-77 would be suicidal...

I need to get crackin' on those snowflake flies though!! haha
