Fishing Status: Slow (due to cold temperatures)

1.) It has been a fairly cold day today across the Carolinas. Here in Kannapolis, NC it has been in the mid 40's all day and is currently 44 right now. The weather has been the complete opposite of what we saw 2 weeks ago. Still, the cold air isn't epic and FRIGID, but it is a reminder that Winter isn't quite over just yet.

2.) As of now, it is looking like a decent fishing day may play out tomorrow, with lower 50's in the southern mountains of NC (Asheville, Brevard) and upper 40's in the northern mountains of NC (Boone, Banner Elk...) It's still well on the cold side, but if you get your fly down to the bottom and make sure it's getting to the trout, you should have a good day. Small BWO nymphs #18-22 have been working, as well as your basic PT nymph. Small midges have also played a key role in trout food, so keep a few #24-28 midges in your box, as well as small San Juan Worms. Water levels have been low, but not anywhere near what each Summer brings in terms of the drought.

Here's a few selected stream flows for NC:
  • Davidson River @ Brevard...70 cfs...average is 164 cfs
  • Watauga River @ Sugar Grove...136 cfs...average is 239 cfs
  • Tuckasegee River @ Cullowhee...541 cfs...average is 408 cfs
  • Nantahala River @ Rainbow Springs...179...average is 303 cfs
  • South Toe River @ Celo...71 cfs...average is 157 cfs
  • Cataloochee River @ Cataloochee...130 cfs...average is 169 (must have had a good amount of rain)
  • Oconaluftee River @ Birdtown...414 cfs...average is 748 cfs

Here's a few TN tailwater and freestone stream's water levels:

  • Clinch River @ Tazewell...4,820 cfs...average is 3,950 cfs
  • Little River @ Townsend...357 cfs...average is 436 cfs
  • Tellico River @ Tellico Plains...286 cfs...average is 431 cfs

3.) So if you do venture out to your favorite trout streams, stay warm and report back...Everyone have a good weekend and thankyou for reading.
