Just as expected, the western Carolinas have received some hefty amounts of rain. Flooding has been a big concern in a lot of places. Now, snow is starting to fall in the higher elevations. Check out the Banner Elk cam or the Beech Parkway cam
Here's a few selected water levels:
Davidson River: 1,770 cfs. Median is 138 cfs.
Watauga River: 3,970 cfs. Median is 202 cfs.
French Broad River: 10,200 cfs. Median is 2,790 cfs.
South Toe River: 1,370 cfs. Median is 164 cfs.
Ken Reece, who is a radio host for New Country Highway 106 FM in Boone, took the 2 above videos of the Watauga out of its banks. It's impossible to wade these waters safely. The water is close to zero visibilty, obstructing the view of the bottom. What used to be a shallow 1 foot riffle is now a 6ft+ pool. Play it safe when around these high rivers!
Another headline worth passing along—US Highway 221 close to the Avery/McDowell County line is closed as a large rockslide has halted all vehicles from passing. Check the traffic info for that closing here.
