I left town at 6:30 and arrived at the fly shop at 9:45. The crowds were few and far between around the hatchery section of the D. There were a few anglers, one upstream of me and two downstream. They weren't having any success either. I stopped by Davidson River Outfitters before hitting the water and they told me streamers are a possibility around the hatchery, but everytime one is thrown to the fish, they chase it and then back down and refuse: exactly what happened when I gave a Barr's Slumpbuster a try. The water was unbelievably clear, so it seemed as if 7x was the only size tippet I could use to at least draw some attention to these wily fish. Tough fishing...Great day to be in the mountains though. The fall foliage was at it's peak.

Still narrowing down one of the following:

Top Ten Excuses Used By Fishing Guides When The Fishing Is Lousy by Guy Turck

10. The river is too high/low this time of year
9. The water is too muddy/clear for optimal fishing
8. The water is too fast/slow for your ability level
7. The fish are catatonic today
6. There must have been a full moon last night
5. These trout have lockjaw
4. Too much fishing pressure has the trout running for their lives
3. The barometric pressure must be dropping
2. You're not holding your tongue right

And the number one (MIDI drum roll please) excuse used by fishing guides when the fishing is lousy...

1. You should have been here yesterday.

But a bad day fishing is a lot like a bad day hunting; who really cares so long as your out in the woods, right? I have almost all the gear to start fly fishing, I just need to "do it" as they say. been wanting to do it for ages, and even if I dont get anything, I may try to go up in a few weeks to Pisgah, set up camp and see what happens, just for the heck of it.

Great blog BTW!!

Hey Tyler,

Sorry to hear of the skunk, it happens to us all. That chase and turn you spoke of is similar to the mock hitting I mentioned to you. I did manage to catch a few on streamers the other day though. I was using an old trick from my home stealhead waters of western NY. I had one rainbow hit so hard that it pulled the line out of my line hand and through the fingers on my rod hand. If you'd like Ill email you the tip so you can see if it works for you as well.

Heading up on Friday, may try the Mitchell. A guide I know has some flies he wants me to try.

Steve,

100% correct!! Albeit the fish didn't cooperate, the secenery makes up for the lack of fish...

Hope you do get into fly fishing. If you do, you better be ready to become addicted!! It's a fun and enjoyable sport to learn. Very rewarding...

Lance,

The fish on the Davidson are not your typical trout. I watched one 18-19" rainbow chase my streamer, stop, pursue it again, finally giving up as if to say "c'mon... that thing ain't real". Happened several times. Shoot me an email at wncflyfishing@gmail.com... I changed my email account due to technical problems with AOL.

your no. 1 excuse should have been, "but I was fishing the Davidson"

Tyler Legg said...

Springer-- Good excuse!! Now, I guess I'm out of luck if I get skunked on any other rivers.

springer said...

Getting skunked on any other river can be any of your top 10, on the Davidson, its always because it's the Davidson.

The D is one of a kind...In all aspects. It's the challenge that makes fishing the Davidson fun.

FUN is relative, we need to hit to sometime, we are olny around 20 miles away from each other...
