1.) First off Hurricane Ida... She's a Cat two storm with winds of 105 mph and a pressure of 979 mb. Currently, Ida is located just north of the Yucatan Channel between Mexico and Cuba. The relevant aspect of Ida and fly fishing in North Carolina is the possibility of heavy rains. Ida could track up through the Carolinas. It's still too early to tell where Ida will end up going, but like mentiond above, heavy rains may be a problem, meaning full (and the possibility of flushed out rivers) and poor fishing. If you do plan on fishing this week, keep an eye on the weather. If it happens, tailwaters might be unfishable for a few days. I know, I know....but, but, but, but...

2.) Ken Van Every, owner of USAOnTheFly was asking for any photos related to fly fishing in NC. He is currently designing a North Carolina page for USAOnTheFly. I sent him several pictures that he should be able to use on his site. Now, if he needed pictures from California, I would be of no use. Tom Chandler of the Trout Underground would be of use though...To visit USAOnTheFly click here.

3.) 'Bout all I have for now. Doesn't look like I'll be on the water for a week or two. Hopefully around Thanksgiving though (then again, might need to rig up some ice fishing gear...).

Hey Tyler,

I went to the Mitchell on friday. Besides being what I consider crowded, I did catch a few nice fish. Nymphs are key right now copper johns, gold ribbed hares ears, and stone fly nymphs. I did have a hole crasher throw a spinner into my spot twice (not same hole, two different spots) after watching me catch a few bows. I think we may need a class on stream etiquete.

Lance,

Thanks for the report. Nymphs are definately outnumbering dries right now. I'm guessing it's mostly because of the lack of any major hatches. Nymph season is here...

I agree...Stream etiquette is lacking on many streams. Don't be surprised if it happens to you more than once during the DH season. It can ruin the day. Sometimes fishing a more secluded spot on the river away from roads and access points is the best option when a lack of etiquette is present on the stream. I hate it too!! I was fishing the Nantahala River one afternoon this summer. I caught a small brook trout out of a pool and apparently another fisherman saw me catch him. Well, he came running down the hill and threw his fly into the pool I was fishing. He caught a few for himself and left. Unfortunately there's not much you can do to prevent it. If you flat out tell the person to leave, you're asking for an arguement. I guess some Fly fisherman and some bait fisherman are different in that they both have different views on stream etiquette...There's a lot of controversy on this topic...

Still, glad you caught some good fish on the Mitchell.

Tyler
